Crossovers are king, but would you be willing to give yours up for a sedan?

• Sedans have fallen by the wayside as consumers have embraced trucks and SUVs.
• Out of the 25 best-selling vehicles in America, only five are sedans.
• A number of brands – including Buick, Chevrolet and Ford – no longer offer a sedan.

Three out of every four new vehicles registered in the United States last year was a truck or SUV. The latter body style was so popular that it accounted for nearly 57% of sales.

Given this shift in consumer preferences, sedans have fallen by the wayside. Ford and Lincoln stopped offering them years ago, while Chevrolet recently ceased production of their last remaining sedan – the Malibu.

That brings us to our question of the day, would you actually buy a sedan? There’s no doubt we’d all have an S-Class, Phantom or 7-Series if we had unlimited funds, but let’s keep things limited to the realm of possibility.

While one of my favorite vehicles is a sedan, I don’t think I’d get another one. I’m actually shopping for a used vehicle and sedans should be more appealing as they’re significantly cheaper than SUVs.

Recently, I spotted a low mileage Chrysler 300. It should check all the boxes as it’s large, comfortable, fully loaded, and all-wheel drive. On top of this, the car costs thousands of dollars less than some of the Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees I’ve been looking at.

However, it’s hard to give up the practicality that crossovers offer as their sizable cargo compartments are hard to beat. They’re an excellent all-around vehicle and a perfect daily driver, even if they’re not the most efficient or fun.

Wagons and hatchbacks would be a good compromise, but they’re even rarer than sedans and the new Volkswagen Golf R cost nearly $50,000. This effectively makes crossovers the default choice, if cargo space is important.

With all that being said, would you buy a sedan? For those of you who already own one, what made you choose it over a truck or SUV?
