The Indian ladder-frame SUV is the latest to receive the blacked-out treatment

Mahindra has added another chapter in the novel of black-themed specials, with the Scorpio-N Carbon Edition. It celebrates the milestone of 200,000 sales of the Scorpio-N in India, but despite its name, it has no carbon fiber trim whatsoever.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N was introduced in 2022, becoming an instant hit with Indian buyers. The ladder-frame SUV is the successor of the original Scorpio that has been around since 2002 and remains on sale as the Scorpio Classic. However, it riders on new underpinnings and boasts modern design and tech features.

The self-proclaimed “Big Daddy Of SUVs” has now received the stereotypical blacked-out treatment, which has proven to be popular with automakers from all around the world when they run out of ideas for special editions and has become almost a cliche.

The exterior is exclusively available in a Metallic Black shade, combined with smoked chrome accents that replace all of the shiny bits of the standard Scoprio-N. The 18-inch alloy wheels are finished in Piano Black, while the roof rails have a Dark Galvano finish. Finally, the headlights and the taillights have a slightly smoked appearance, contributing to the the sinister looks.

For the interior, Mahindra designers chose black leatherette seats with contrasting stitching. The Carbon Edition doesn’t have any real or fake carbon fiber bits, instead opting for smoked chrome inserts. The SUV is only available with a three-row, seven-seater configuration, and is based on the high-spec Z8 and Z8L trims. This means that features such as the 8-inch infotainment, sunroof, and 12-speaker audio system are included as standard.

The Scorpio-N is available with either a 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 197 hp (149 kW / 200 PS), or a 2.2-liter diesel generating 173 hp (129 kW / 175 PS). Both units can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox. In the case of the gasoline version, power is transmitted to the rear wheels, while the diesel is also available with four-wheel drive as an option.

The Carbon Edition of the Mahindra Scorpio-N is priced between ₹19,19,400 ($22,000) and ₹ 24,89,099 ($28,500) in India, depending on the powertrain. This marks a small premium of ₹20,000 ($230) compared to the equivalent trims of the standard Scorpion-N.

The main rival of the ladder-frame SUV is the similarly themed Tata Harrier Dark Edition, which is based on unibody underpinnings sourced by Land Rover.
