Audi’s SQ9 flagship SUV has been spotted testing in Europe, possibly debuting next year.
The model closely resembles the redesigned Q7 but has a longer wheelbase and unique rear.
It could ride on the Premium Platform Combustion and feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.
Audi is working on a range-topping Q9 crossover and spy photographers have caught the upcoming S variant. It’s a performance-focused three-row crossover, which will presumably battle higher-end versions of the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS.
Spied undergoing testing in Europe, the prototype features a large mesh grille that is flanked by split lighting units. They’re joined by a wide lower intake that spans nearly the entire width of the vehicle.
Moving further back, we can see curvaceous but generic bodywork. Designers also gave the model an expansive greenhouse and Ford Mustang Mach-E style door handles, which reside on the upward sweeping beltline. Elsewhere, there are sizable wheels and a relatively flat roof.
The rear end isn’t particularly interesting, but it sports a four-tailpipe exhaust system as well as a small diffuser. They’re joined by wide reflectors, a modest spoiler, and what appears to be boomerang-shaped taillights.

Unfortunately, the model closely echoes the Q7 and this makes it hard to tell them apart. However, a closer inspection reveals a number of differences including longer rear doors and more expansive third quarter glass. More notably, the Q7 has a liftgate-mounted license plate recess while the Q9’s is located on the rear bumper. That’s hardly a night and day difference, but hopefully there are more changes hiding beneath the camouflage.
Audi has been tight-lipped about the Q9 lineup, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the model rides on the Premium Platform Combustion and sports a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine in S guise. We can also expect plug-in hybrid variants as well as a price tag to match its flagship status.
