Walmart is imposing a new time limit for parkers starting on May 1, 2023.
Cars parked over three hours will face fines, which can total up to $48 a day.
Vehicles with parking fines over $50 will be towed from the Walmart parking lot.
Wallydocking is a term some folks in the van-life or RV world are all too familiar with. Essentially, it involves parking your vehicle at a Walmart for a protracted period of time, and until now, the retail giant hasn’t exactly been cracking down on it. But in Honolulu next month, all that’s about to change. One store will start issuing fines for anyone who parks there for more than three hours. Stay too long, and you might find your ride towed away.
Specifically, the new rules will be in effect at the Walmart and Sam’s Club located off Keeaumoku Street. The two stores share a parking structure that’s intended for customers only, though locals claim it’s not just shoppers who’ve been using the lot.
“It’s been really hard to find parking here because there are so many trucks and things here because of the construction across the street. They need to find parking for those people somewhere else,” said Thomas Barber, a regular Walmart shopper, to KHon2. Starting on May 1, those in the lot for more than three hours will face fines of $3 for every 30 minutes with a daily cap of $48. Anyone who racks up a balance over $50 could see their vehicle towed.
Will It Really Free Up Spaces?

“I think it will free up parking. A lot less people will be parking here and walking to different stores, and I won’t have to spend 30 minutes finding a parking spot, trying to get in and out,” said Ge Song, another Walmart shopper. The store says it’ll soon install stations for customers to pay for their parking fines. While Walmart can impose this sort of rule at any of its stores, typically it’s quite friendly to long-term parkers.
Walmart, known for its friendly policy toward RV travelers, has made it clear that this kind of rule is far from universal. The company states online: “Walmart values RV travelers and considers them among our best customers. Consequently, we do permit RV parking on our store parking lots as we are able. Permission to park is extended by individual store managers, based on availability of parking space and local laws.”
In other words, don’t expect this parking policy to be rolled out nationwide, especially in smaller, less densely populated areas across the USA. However, if you’re planning to park at a big-box Walmart in a city like Honolulu, you might want to rethink your parking strategy.
