Maranello’s hybrid supercar has been spotted testing, and it could pack more than 850 hp

• Despite wearing less camouflage than before, the model is still heavily disguised.
• The car could have an upgraded powertrain that produces more than 850 hp.

Ferrari’s working on a hotter 296, and it’s reportedly going to be unveiled later this month. Since things are getting down to the wire, a new prototype has been spied undergoing testing in Maranello.

Caught wearing less disguise than previous prototypes, the model gives off a Viper vibe thanks to a new front ‘bumper’ with horizontal slats. However, the bumper appears to be fake as we can see a splitter hiding behind it. That isn’t the only misdirection, as there’s bulky cladding and a heavily disguised rear end.

The subterfuge makes changes hard to decipher, but previous spy shots have given us a glimpse at a new front bumper with three lower vents at the outside edges. We can also see lightweight wheels backed up by a carbon ceramic braking system with Ferrari-branded yellow calipers.

While the latest prototype has a comically large rear spoiler, it hints at an upsized one for the production model. Previous images have also suggested the car will be equipped with a more aggressive diffuser.

Ferrari has been keeping a tight lid on the details of the 296 VS, but it’s expected to stick with the traditional “lighter and more powerful” recipe on the 296 GTB. Expect an upgraded powertrain that combines a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine, an electric motor, and a modest battery pack.

This setup gives the GTB a combined output of 819 hp (610 kW / 830 PS) and 546 lb-ft (740 Nm) of torque. 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) comes in 2.9 seconds, and the top speed is more than 205 mph (330 km/h). If you really care about the EV range of a Ferrari, the 296 GTB can travel 16 miles (25 km) on electricity alone.

The 296 Versione Speciale could be unveiled on April 29 and feature active aerodynamics as well as more than 850 hp (634 kW / 862 PS). Of course, we’ll find out full details soon enough.
