Some days you just want to drive to work without worrying about a medieval booby trap lurking under your tires. Unfortunately for the residents of Falmouth, Massachusetts, that was a little too much to ask earlier this month.

The bizarre and dangerous incident unfolded when local police discovered nearly 500 nails scattered across public streets within a one-mile radius. Thankfully, no accidents were reported, although several unlucky residents did suffer flat tires.

Patrolling officers first found the galvanized nails around 2 a.m. on April 18. Adding to the chaos, the nails had been deliberately placed point-up, forming makeshift spike strips across multiple roads. This setup posed an obvious threat to public safety, since a tire blowout at speed could easily trigger a serious crash.

A Disturbing Discovery Spreads

After a sweep of the surrounding area, officers found even more nails intentionally placed on private property, including residential driveways. In one unsettling case, nails were tucked neatly beneath the tires of a parked pickup truck. Thankfully, the police managed to collect them before any more damage was done.

According to a statement from the Falmouth Police Department, officers retrieved a total of 478 nails with help from the Department of Public Works. On top of that, residents pitched in by gathering additional nails from their driveways and sidewalks using magnets, which honestly sounds like the least fun neighborhood scavenger hunt imaginable.

The story quickly gained traction, earning coverage from major outlets like CBS News. Local resident Deborah Bent, who was alerted about nails on her driveway, summed it up: “It’s disturbing for sure. If they rolled forward, it could have punctured the tires for sure. They may have been pitching them out the window, but there were some that were deliberately put in front of people’s tires.”

Not everyone got off easy. Resident Cindy Collings ended up at a repair shop after finding two nails lodged in one of her car’s tires. Even so, the town caught a break, as there were no reported crashes or injuries tied to the sabotage, suggesting most of the nails were recovered before causing serious harm.

Police are now urging residents to check any surveillance footage they might have and to come forward with information. With no clear motive or specific targets, authorities suspect the act may have been a reckless prank, possibly by teenagers. They hope those responsible will be held accountable and recognize the severe dangers their actions pose to the community.
