  • Police pulled over a car because its owner had an active warrant.
  • After arresting the driver, a raccoon popped up with a meth pipe.
  • The discovery led to the recovery of bulk drugs in the vehicle.

Police officers have a tough job to do. They regularly face all sorts of wild circumstances, and often, they’re unpredictable. That’s no clearer than after a recent arrest in Springfield, Ohio. Authorities pulled over a woman because they suspected that she had a warrant for her arrest. After securing her, however, the whole incident took an unexpected turn.

A pet raccoon in the vehicle quickly made it clear that there was more to this situation than just a routine arrest, as it led the officers straight to drug paraphernalia hidden in the car.

As Officer Branham returned to the Hyundai, he saw Chewy, a pet raccoon (or is that a crackoon?), hanging out in the front seat. That’s strange on its own but what’s weirder, or perhaps wilder in this case, was that Chewy had a meth pipe in his mouth. Branham couldn’t contain himself and burst out with laughter and giggling. “He’s playing with her meth pipe right now,” he says on bodycam footage.

After pulling one out of the car, Chewy seemingly produces a second in a matter of moments. “He’s trying to smoke it,” Branham exclaims. In reality, the raccoon does seem to have some understanding of how to hold such an item. In any case, it led officers to search the rest of the vehicle where they found a “bulk amount of methamphetamine,” crack cocaine, and three used glass meth pipes. Vidal is now facing charges associated with all of that.

Officers are also investigating to see if she has the legal documentation to keep a raccoon as a pet. Kudos to Chewy, who didn’t realize it at the time but was helping officers take dangerous drugs off the streets. Here’s to hoping that he ends up with a far more thoughtful, considerate, and less legally compromised owner in the near future.
