  • The grille is joined with squared-off headlight surrounds and a satin black finish.
  • Unsurprisingly, the Wrangler looks a little odd without its trademark grille.
  • Customers can customize the lattice grille and apply letters and numbers to it.

Automotive design is often defined by details, the signature shapes and stylistic quirks that make a car instantly recognizable, whether you love them or not. BMW has its kidney grilles, Alfa Romeo has the famed Scudetto, Bugatti boasts the horseshoe, and Jeep proudly wears its seven-slot grille like a badge of honor.

However, one British tuner has decided that decades of brand identity aren’t all that important and has tossed Jeep’s iconic front end aside in favor of something more reminiscent of a classic Land Rover.

The company in question is Chelsea Truck Co., and it has just released what it calls the Heritage Lattice Grille for the Jeep Wrangler JL. Among Jeep’s current lineup, it’s fair to say the Wrangler’s standard grille is the most instantly recognizable. So when you strip it away, what you’re left with is a Wrangler that looks more like a budget knockoff than an off-road icon. Still, if you’re a Jeep owner aiming to stand out in a sea of seven slots, this certainly does the trick.

Chelsea Truck Co. says its new grille for the 4×4 is made from “OEM-quality materials.” It has a satin black finish and also encompasses squared-off headlight surrounds. There’s no doubt it transforms the front fascia of the Wrangler, although we’re not convinced it does it in a good way.

According to the British tuner, customization is part of the package too, as buyers can add their own letters or numbers to the lattice grille, making it more personalized, or at least more noticeable.

This particular Wrangler build also rolls on a fresh set of 20-inch forged wheels, coated in the same satin black finish as the grille. The wheels are wrapped in meaty off-road tires for added presence, and for those seeking even more visual drama, a larger 22-inch set is also available.

If the lattice grille isn’t quite your style, Chelsea Truck Co. offers another aftermarket solution: a four-slot grille made from carbon fiber. It’s priced at £1,440 (around $1,905), and arguably presents a cleaner, more upscale look than the lattice design.
