The new Q9 is inching closer to production and getting a unique look to distance itself from the Q7

• The prototype features a handful of changes, which help distance the large SUV from the Q7.

Our spy photographers have caught the 2027 Audi Q9 on multiple occasions, but the latest prototype is notable for ditching disguise and wearing a number of production parts. This gives us our best look yet at the upcoming model and it’s clearly more than a supersized Q7.

One of the biggest differentiators will be a massive grille that features 16 vertical bars as well as a high-mounted four-ring logo. The grille is flanked by split lighting units and a wide lower intake. The latter features horizontal and vertical bars as well as a large sensor in the middle.

In profile, the Q9 is pretty unremarkable but it features a long hood that meets a rakish windscreen. The latter flows into a sloping roof that sports sizable rails. Further below, there’s curvaceous bodywork, Mustang Mach-E style door pulls, and a generous greenhouse. We can also see sizable wheels wrapped in Continental SportContact tires.

The rear end echoes the new A6 as we can see boomerang-style taillights that are connected by a thin illuminated strip. They’re joined by a slightly recessed bumper, which has wide reflectors and a minimalist dual exhaust system.

Spy photographers haven’t gotten a good look inside, but we can expect the model to follow in the footsteps of newer vehicles such as the A6 and Q6 e-tron. This means we can likely expect an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch infotainment system, and a 10.9-inch front passenger display.

Little else is known about the model at this point, but it will ride on the Premium Platform Combustion and is expected to offer petrol and diesel options. One of these may include a 3.0-liter TSFI V6 with mild hybrid technology. In the new A6, it produces 362 hp (270 kW / 367 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque.

We can also expect a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which could combine a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a sizable battery pack. This enables the A6 e-hybrid to offer outputs of 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS) and 362 hp (270 kW / 367 PS).
