  • Jeep has introduced the Awning and Rooftop Tent concept at Overland Expo West.
  • It features a carbon fiber shell that is mounted directly to the roof of the Sunchaser concept.
  • The tent can be accessed from inside the vehicle and can fit a queen-size mattress.

Overland Expo West kicked off earlier today and Jeep used the event to put a concept on a concept. That’s not something you hear every day, but their latest development is a rooftop tent from Jeep Performance Parts.

Installed on top of the Wrangler 4xe Sunchaser concept, the Awning and Rooftop Tent (ARTT) concept was created in collaboration with Dometic and is billed as a premium camping companion. As Jeep explained, rooftop tents have exploded in popularity, but many of them are heavy and have poor aerodynamics.

The ARTT addresses these problems by using a lightweight carbon fiber shell that features an aerodynamically optimized design. That isn’t the only nifty innovation as the tent is mounted directly onto the Wrangler’s roof, which eliminates the need for a heavy roof rack.

When you get to your campsite, setup promises to be hassle-free thanks to “Dometic’s AIR Frame Inflation technology and an integrated awning that swings out 270 degrees.” Once the tent is up, users will find roomy sleeping quarters that are large enough to accommodate a queen-size mattress.

Perhaps one of the coolest features is the ability to access the tent from inside the vehicle thanks to the Wrangler’s removable Freedom Panels. To ease entry and egress, there’s a carbon fiber step that can be installed over the center console.

As for the Wrangler 4xe Sunchaser concept, it debuted earlier this year at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. It features a unique exterior with ventilated fender flares, rock rails, and side-mounted storage boxes that recall those found on the Land Rover Defender.

They’re joined by a Warn winch, a unique push bar, and a custom leather interior featuring gloss black trim. Rounding out the highlights are a 2-inch (51 mm) lift and 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 mud terrain tires.
