Honda is currently working on reviving the Prelude, but whether it can capture the magic of its predecessors remains to be seen. While the new model is set to feature a hybrid powertrain and simulated gear shifts – hardly the stuff of driving excitement – it’s hard not to feel skeptical. In contrast, the classics still have plenty to offer, as evidenced by this 1989 Prelude currently up for sale in the US.
This particular Prelude is finished in the rare Barbados Yellow and spent its entire life in Rhode Island until last year. It’s been driven around 37,000 miles (59,000 km) since new, and while that’s certainly not a lot for a car from 1989, it’s not quite a low-mileage barn find or garage queen either. Nevertheless, the auction bids have already surged past $15,000, proving there’s still plenty of demand for a clean example of this iconic Honda coupe.

Over the years, Honda produced a variety of Prelude variants, each offering something a little different. This one is the Si model, equipped with the ever-popular five-speed manual transmission and powered by Honda’s 2.0-liter naturally aspirated B20A5 engine. When it was new, this engine churned out 135 hp and 127 lb-ft (172 Nm) of torque. While this particular car doesn’t feature the four-wheel steering system that some of its siblings did, it promises to offer a solid, enjoyable driving experience.
According to the Bring a Trailer listing, the car has been resprayed in its original Barbados Yellow, which accounts for its surprisingly pristine appearance. It sits on 14-inch steel wheels, giving it a clean, simple look that’s well in keeping with the era.

Inside, the Prelude stays true to the ’80s Honda vibe, with black cloth seats featuring striped inserts and a color-matched dashboard. It’s a touch retro, but not in a bad way. While the car might not be loaded with modern luxuries, it does come with cruise control, a nice, if somewhat unexpected, feature for a car of its age. The stereo has been upgraded to a Pioneer unit, which is a solid touch for those who want to crank up some tunes while cruising.

Obviously, this Prelude can’t compete with a modern hot hatch, but it was praised for its handling when it was released, thanks in part to the double wishbone suspension.
