  • Japanese buyers are treated with two special editions of the Toyota Crown sedan.
  • The 70th anniversary gets a two-tone exterior and special badges inside the cabin.
  • The Limited Matte Metal is painted in a dark shade that’s easy to maintain.

The Toyota Crown Sedan just got two special editions in Japan, featuring unique liveries. The first is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Crown with a two-tone treatment and commemorative badges, while the other features the Matte Metal shade that has already been applied in the Crown Crossover and Crown Sport.

The four-door sedan is probably the coolest member of the Crown lineup, retaining its role as the flagship model of Toyota for 70 years since the debut of the original in 1955. To mark this milestone, the company has launched the Crown Special Edition Z “The 70th” that will be exclusively available in Japan.

The anniversary special features the Precious Metal shade on the upper part of the bodywork, combined with either Precious White Pearl or Precious Black Pearl for the lower half. The two-tone exterior makes the Crown look like a Maybach or Rolls-Royce competitor, even though it is much more affordable.

The sedan rides on 20-inch alloy wheels finished in matte black. The gray side decals with a discreet 70th marking are optional. An anniversary logo with the Crown emblem is laser-etched on the dashboard and engraved on the jewel-like gear selector. It can be found on the puddle lights, the recycled leather pouch for the manual, and the key fob. The Black Lustre interior with matching wood grain inserts keeps it classy and understated.

Toyota has also announced the Crown Special Edition Z Limited Matte Metal. This features a dark gray matte exterior with a special surface treatment that makes it easy to maintain. It also rides on matte black 20-inch wheels, and gets a Black Lustre interior although it misses out on the anniversary special’s jewel-like gearknob. Dealer options include detachable headrest pillows, and a panoramic sunroof.

The special editions are, like the rest of the Crown sedan lineup, available with two powertrain options; a 2.5-liter self-charging hybrid, or a Mirai-sourced FCEV running on hydrogen.

The Crown Special Edition Z “The 70th” starts from ¥7,550,000 ($52,700) for the hybrid, and from ¥8,550,000 ($59,700) for the FCEV. The Matte Metal is even more expensive, starting at ¥8,100,000 ($56,500) and ¥9,100,000 ($63,500) respectively.
