Botched repairs, buggy software, and overheating block heaters headline Ford’s latest round of recalls

Ford’s recalls are getting hot and heavy in all the wrong ways. That’s clear today as the automaker has issued five recalls including two that involve fires.

The first focuses on 1,797 vehicles that were incorrectly repaired under a previous recall. This includes the 2021-2023 Lincoln Corsair as well as the 2020-2023 Ford Escape and 2022-2023 Ford Maverick.

The recalled hybrids and plug-in hybrids have 2.5-liter engines, which can release oil and fuel vapors into the engine compartment. These may accumulate and start a fire.

Dealers will install updated powertrain control module software to address the issue. However, in the meantime, owners are being told to “park and shut off the engine as quickly as possible if they hear unexpected engine noises, notice a reduction in vehicle power, or see smoke.”

The second flaming hot recall involves 6,781 vehicles equipped with a 1.5- or 2.0-liter engine as well as an engine block heater. A number of models are impacted including the 2023 Corsair, 2023-2025 Escape, 2024-2025 Nautilus, and 2025 Corsair, Maverick, and Bronco Sport.

Ford says the engine block heater may overheat when plugged in. The automaker is aware of 120 reports potentially related to the problem, but no fires or injuries. To address the issue, dealers will replace the engine block heater element and inspect/replace the electrical cord.

Chugging right along, the third recall involves engine failures in the 2025 Transit, F-150, and Explorer. The models have a 3.3- or 3.5-liter engine, which may have a poorly machined connecting rod. This can lead to damage and, eventually, engine failure.

154 vehicles are involved in the recall and Ford estimates that only 20% are problematic. Unfortunately for these customers, the automaker doesn’t have a fix at the moment.

The fourth recall involves 30,679 Lincoln Nautilus SUVs from the 2024 model year. These have a software issue that can cause the panoramic and infotainment displays to reboot, resulting in a blank screen. This runs afoul of multiple safety regulations ranging from rear visibility to showing the current gear.

Since this is a software issue, the fix is relatively straightforward as it can be addressed via an over-the-air update. If that doesn’t work, customers can take their vehicle to the dealership.

The fifth and final recall is designed to address a botched recall on the 2022 F-150 Lightning. 192 trucks have a tire pressure monitoring system that may not warn drivers when their tires are low. To fix it, dealers will update the body control module software.
