BMW’s iX sales dropped 33 percent in Q3 despite overall brand growth.
XM hybrid sales rose 32.6 percent in Q3 but remain weak year-to-date.
Following the US government’s decision to scrap the federal EV tax credit, many car manufacturers reported a jump in electric vehicle sales in the third quarter as consumers rushed to buy one. BMW, however, bucked the trend, posting a decline in sales of its electrified models.
Between July and September, the German automaker says it sold a total of 16,096 battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States. This was 2.8 percent down from the 16,557 that it sold in the third quarter of 2024, although the carmaker was keen to point out that electrified models accounted for nearly 20 percent of its total sales through the first three quarters of this year.
Numbers With Gaps
Frustratingly, BMW hasn’t broken down exactly how many examples of each of its EVs and PHEVs it sold. For example, the i4, i5, and i7 are lumped in with general 4-Series, 5-Series, and 7-Series sales.
What we do know is that BMW sold 3,136 examples of its single standalone EV, the iX, locally in the third quarter of this year, a 33 percent decline from the 4,679 sold in Q3 2024. Additionally, year-to-date sales of the iX have dropped 11.6 percent from 11,169 last year to 9,878 this year.
Similarly, year-to-date sales of the plug-in hybrid XM have decreased 11.8 percent this year to a measly 1,221. On the flip side, it did experience a 32.6 percent increase in Q3 with 407 units sold.
Looking at the finer detail, BMW’s strong quarter was powered largely by its SUVs. The X3, X5, and X7 all posted double-digit growth, with the X5 alone jumping 47 percent year over year.
The 5 Series also stood out, more than tripling its Q3 deliveries compared with last year, as the latest generation gained traction. On the flip side, coupe models such as the 4 Series and 8 Series lost ground, reminding us that not every corner of BMW’s lineup is moving in the same direction.
Big Picture Sales
Despite the mixed results for its electrified vehicles, BMW’s total sales this year in the US are in the green. It sold a total of 275,385 vehicles through the first three quarters of the year, or an 8.5 percent increase from the 253,840 that were sold during the same period in 2024. The Mini brand also experienced a jump, reporting sales of 7,270 vehicles, or 37.6 percent more than the 5,284 sold in 2024.
