NATS students are building a Supra-style roadster from a kei car.
The one-off features a wide bodykit and lowered suspension.
It will appear alongside a Vellfire sedan and Nissan lowrider.
With the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 just around the corner, preparations are in full swing as builders scramble to wrap up their latest creations. Among the returning names is NATS, or Nihon Automobile College, whose student-led projects have become a regular highlight of the show.
This year, the team is back with three ambitious builds, each one louder and more imaginative than the last.
Leading the charge at the NATS booth is an eye-catching sedan version of the Toyota Vellfire, cleverly reimagined using the underpinnings of a Lexus LS. But drawing nearly as much attention is a tiny and quirky reinterpretation of the Toyota GR Supra, a roofless, roadster-style concept built from the bones of a Daihatsu Copen.
The one-off build seen here is inspired by the NATS-designed Toyota Supra Roadster concept from 2020 that was based on the Lexus SC. This new version continues that theme, using a wide bodykit, and authentic GR Supra components. Understandably, given the car’s diminutive size, the 2JZ-GTE engine didn’t make the cut.
To pull off the look, the students leaned heavily on original GR Supra parts. Fitting those to the diminutive Daihatsu Copen required trimming and reshaping, often dramatically, to accommodate the kei car’s slender frame. The rest of the exterior was brought together using custom fiberglass pieces made in-house.
The mini-me roadster is fitted with genuine headlights and taillights from the GR Supra. The bumpers are also made from Supra bits, although heavily modified. The bodykit includes a pronounced splitter, a vented hood, wider front and rear fenders, side skirts, and a rear diffuser.
A custom rear deck is on the way too, featuring a molded ducktail spoiler and a fixed rear wing to complete the look. Visually, the only panels retained from the Copen are the doors, mirrors, windshield, and removable hardtop. Everything else has either been replaced or heavily altered.

The team hasn’t shared full details on performance or chassis upgrades just yet, but a few changes seem all but certain. Expect to see aftermarket alloy wheels, a notably lower ride height, larger brakes, and some level of engine tuning in the final version.
Chances are the build retains the Daihatsu Copen’s stock turbocharged 658 cc three-cylinder engine, which produces 63 hp (47 kW) and 92 Nm (68 lb-ft) of torque, sending power to the front wheels through either a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic. That said, it’s entirely possible the students have coaxed a bit more performance from it.
The mini Supra roadster by NATS is still under development, with the ultimate goal of being exhibited at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 on January 9-11. It will appear alongside the Lexus-based Toyota Vellfire sedan and a lowrider-style Nissan Gloria, rounding out NATS’ triple-entry for this year’s event. Until then, you can follow the car’s progress through the official build videos shared below.
