The Ford Heritage Vault gets a digital update as AI brings classic black-and-white designs into color
- Ford has used AI to bring historical styling negatives back to life.
- Unfortunately, the company decided to use modern colors.
- While just an experiment, the idea has plenty of potential.
A number of people remain wary about artificial intelligence, but Ford has put the technology to good use. While automakers have embraced it to aid in design and development, the Blue Oval is using AI to bring history back to life.
While the company’s marketing has been a mess ever since they replaced a press site with a glorified blog, the Ford Heritage Vault has been a rare bright spot. It’s part of the company’s archives, which houses more than 350,000 styling negatives.

These are stored in a temperature-controlled vault and “show the design process, from beginning to end, of all of our vehicles dating from the mid-1950s through the turn of the 21st century.” Unsurprisingly, many of these negatives are black and white.
However, the images are being colorized thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. As part of an experiment, the company decided to see what classic Mustangs would look like with a modern color palette.
This includes a 1963 clay model of a Mustang sedan in Intense Lime Yellow Metallic. The company also released an image of a 1966 Mustang Fastback in Grabber Blue Metallic as well as a 1966 concept in Race Red. You can also see a Mustang I concept dressed in Orange Fury Metallic instead of it’s original white.
While Ford was just playing around, it would be nice to see colorized photos of cars and concepts in the way they were meant to be seen. This would align with historical efforts and result in photos that look and feel authentic.
