The CLE lineup is expanding with a new CLE 63, which should have a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with around 577 hp
- Spy photographers have snapped the facelifted Mercedes-AMG CLE 53.
- It was spied alongside an apparent CLE 63, but not the exclusive Mythos.
- This suggests the twin-turbo V8 will also be offered in a ‘traditional’ version.
Mercedes is working on a hardcore CLE Mythos, which will serve as the spiritual successor to the CLK Black Series. However, that isn’t the only thing they have up their sleeve as the coupe and convertible are getting a facelift. It also looks like the model could finally gain a V8-powered 63 variant.
Two AMG prototypes were recently spied undergoing testing in Europe and they’re about a subtle as a sledgehammer. Since Mercedes has decided to throw taste out the window, the cars have been equipped with star-infused head- and taillights. Those touches will presumably be joined by a new front bumper and a lightly revised grille.

Out back, the blue CLE 53 prototype has a familiar four tailpipe exhaust system with circular tips. It’s joined by a sportier rear bumper and a revised diffuser with just two fins.

The other prototype is more notable as it features four squared off tailpipes. These are a telltale sign of a 63 variant, which implies V8-power won’t be limited to the ultra-expensive Mythos. Instead, we can expect the 63 to have a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with around 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) of torque.
That would be a sizable bump over the CLE 53, which has a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six developing 443 hp (330 kW / 449 PS) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm) of torque. It enables the coupe to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in as little as four seconds.
As for the CLE Mythos, it’s rumored to have around 637 hp (475 kW / 646 PS). That model also has a far more aggressive body kit and could be limited to a mere 30 units.
