Featuring a lightly revised design and a more comfortable interior, this robotaxi has grand ambitions

• Zoox has introduced a revamped robotaxi with changes inside and out.
• It features more comfortable seats, an improved touchscreen, and new colors.
• The robotaxi will go into “large-scale production” and launch later this year.

Amazon’s Zoox largely flies under the radar, but they’re back in the news as they’ve unveiled an updated robotaxi. It sports an evolutionary design and will soon go into large-scale production.

Despite looking instantly recognizable, the vehicle incorporates a “series of refinements” that are easy to overlook at first glance. However, a closer inspection reveals a revised front end with new reflectors and a cleaner license plate area.

Zoox also mentioned an improved door interface with a new speaker and microphone. The company added additional two-way audio capabilities, which makes it easier for users to communicate with support technicians, other road users, and first responders.

The interior has been revamped to “create an even more inviting atmosphere for riders.” As part of the makeover, the dark and dreary cabin gives way to a lighter and brighter design.

New top, old bottom

Stone Gray flooring and trim replaces the previous black components, while the seats adopt a lighter Aloe Green color. Speaking of the latter, the seats and headrests have been equipped with additional padding and new curves. This helps to improve comfort as well as ergonomics.

Elsewhere, there are larger cup holders and a “more vivid touchscreen.” The company also added fluting on the wireless charger to keep phones securely in place.

Zoox said the updated color palette makes it easier to spot bags and phones, which could accidently get left behind. The company also worked to increase interior durability, which is critical for a robotaxi.

The autonomous vehicle will go into production in Hayward, California soon and join the company’s fleet later this year. Zoox can build up to 100 vehicles per week, but cautioned expansion is subject to regulatory approval.
