From Model Ts to NAPCO pickups, hundreds of classics from one family collection are looking for new homes

Some people inherit jewelry, watches, or maybe a nice piece of furniture. The Born family amassed something considerably harder to fit into a safe-deposit box. Namely, hundreds of old cars and trucks. After three generations of collecting, a portion of that sprawling Colorado stash is now heading to auction, and some lots reportedly start at just 50 cents.
VanDerBrink Auctions will sell roughly 300 vehicles, signs, and pieces of automotive memorabilia from the Born Family Collection on September 19 in Eaton, Colorado. That’s roughly 90 minutes north of Denver and just east of Fort Collins. The collection belonged to the late Doug Born, his father, and his grandfather, with the family reportedly spending decades traveling to auctions around the country in search of old iron. And there is a lot of it.
The collection leans particularly heavily toward early Fords, including a 1912 Model T Touring, several Model As, a custom 1932 Ford Roadster, and numerous coupes, sedans, pickups, and projects from the 1930s and ’40s. Some are restored. Others are… what’s the nice way to put it? Very much not.
There are 1933 and 1935 coupe projects, a 1934 three-window coupe project, a 1934 school bus project, multiple 1936 and 1937 Fords, COE trucks, panels, and enough F-Series pickups to keep a restoration shop busy for years. That said, the collection isn’t exclusively Ford-centric.
Chevrolet fans can choose from everything from a 1931 sedan to a 1955 NAPCO pickup, a 1964 Bel Air two-door, several early Chevy trucks and panels, and numerous projects. Then things get weirder. There’s a 1957 Pontiac Super Chief wagon, a 1961 Oldsmobile 98 two-door hardtop, a 1958 Dodge wagon, a 1974 Pontiac Firebird Esprit, Henry Js, International trucks and panels, and even a Plymouth Ramcharger.
Local outlet KDVR reports that bidding on some of the vehicles starts at just 50 cents. That makes for a fantastic headline, although nobody should expect to actually haul away a 1930s Ford for pocket change. There’s also a buyer’s premium of 8 percent for onsite bidders and 10 percent for those participating online.
The auction kicks off at 9 a.m. on September 19, with an in-person preview scheduled the previous day. Online bidding will also be available, though VanDerBrink is encouraging serious buyers to attend in person due to potentially spotty cell service.
