Highlights from what’s new on Hulu in February

Nightmare Alley (February 1)

One of the best films of 2021, Nightmare Alley came out on the same day as Spider-Man: No Way Home and amid the rising threat of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. The film wasn’t able to garner much attention as a result. It’s a shame, because it’s not only one of the best of the year but also among director Guillermo del Toro’s finest films. Now, it may finally get the attention it deserves as it becomes available on Hulu.

A carnival worker sees his chance to make it big with a mentalism act. He breaks off on his own with the woman he loves, but he soon finds himself getting deeper and deeper into his con, making enemies with powerful, dangerous people.

Pam & Tommy (February 2)

Pam & Tommy chronicles the brief marriage between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, focusing on the highly publicized leak of their sex tape in the 1990s. This Hulu original miniseries appropriately tells the story as a true-crime narrative. Two enterprising crooks saw a golden opportunity in the early days of internet video. They took it, but in the process, they caused enormous harm to an innocent celebrity couple, most especially Anderson, a young rising star whose reputation took an enormous hit after such a public violation of her privacy.

With some buzz-worthy performances by Lily James, Sebastian Stan, and Seth Rogen, Pam & Tommy is sure to be a conversation starter when it premieres on the streamer on February 2.

The Beta Test (February 4)

A Hollywood agent takes part in an adultery scheme in which he can have an anonymous encounter with no strings attached. Afterward, he’s left obsessed with the mystery woman’s identity and paranoid about his marriage and the people who invited him to cheat on his wife in the first place.

After films like Thunder Road and The Wolf of Snow Hollow, Jim Cummings is one of the most exciting new American indie filmmakers. With 2021’s The Beta Test, he once again proves that he’s an original new voice in cinema, taking on the Hollywood machine and all the abuse and hypocrisy that comes with it.
