Buying the right fitness tracker for your needs

Budget doesn’t mean bad. Not only is the new Xiaomi Mi Band 7 a powerful fitness tracker, there are also plenty of other similar products available. From accurate workout tracking, to SpO2 and heart rate monitoring, many affordable options pack more features than ever.

Check out our picks below for the best devices on the market at Xiaomi’s price range. In case budget isn’t a concern, we’ve also included some pricier picks as well.

The best Xiaomi Mi Band 7 alternatives

  • Huawei Band 6: Huawei’s latest offering, the Huawei Band 7 isn’t globally available but we’re still fans of the Band 6 anyway. Both generations are loaded with features at a good price.
  • Fitbit Inspire 2: Fitbit’s Inspire 2 is a good tool for fitness, health, and sleep tracking and boasts a 10-day battery life. The Fitbit app is also one of the best companion apps we’ve seen.
  • Amazfit Band 5: Very similar to Xiaomi’s Mi Band 5, Huami’s Amazfit Band 5 features Alexa support and blood oxygen monitoring.
  • Fitbit Charge 5: Our current pick for the best fitness tracker you can buy, the Fitbit Charge 5 offers a bright OLED display and a mix of accurate sensors. It does, however, come at a price.
  • Apple Watch SE: If you’re an Apple shopper and can spring for a slightly higher price point, Apple’s “budget” device is a very solid smartwatch with a deep well of fitness tracking features.

Huawei Band 6: Keeping up with Xiaomi

If you can’t yet get your hands on the latest model, the Huawei Band 7, the Huawei Band 6 is still a solid option in the budget category. It sports a smartwatch aesthetic with a large 1.47-inch AMOLED display plus all-day SpO2 monitoring, solid sleep tracking, 96 workout modes, menstrual tracking, and more. It won’t, however, offer the smartwatch features you can get if you’re willing to wait.

Although not yet wildly available, the newest generation Huawei Band 7 again offers sleep tracking, heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring, plus Huawei’s excellent Health app. Compared to the Huawei Band 6, it improves users’ experience with music controls, message quick reply, and the ability to answer phone calls. It also offers support for NFC payments on the wrist.

Fitbit Inspire 2: The best budget pick from Fitbit

Fitbit’s most affordable tracker, the Inspire 2 is a cost effective option for entry into the company’s ecosystem. For runners and cyclists, it offers connected GPS and a lightweight, albeit bland, design. It also provides excellent sleep tracking. In addition to standard activity metrics, the Inspire 2 boasts accurate heart rate tracking as well.

Viewing data on the device’s display can get tricky outdoors and we’re not convinced it quite lives up to its price. However, purchasing an Inspire 2 will get new members a year-long membership to Fitbit Premium, which helps justify the purchase.

Fitbit’s cheapest fitness tracker

The Fitbit Inspire 2 is an inexpensive alternative to the Charge 4, but the real value comes from the free year of Fitbit Premium included with purchases for new users.

Pros

  • Low price point
  • Small, lightweight design
  • Accurate fitness, health, and sleep tracking
  • Connected GPS is a nice addition

Cons

  • Bland design
  • The display isn’t great
  • Side buttons can be unresponsive

Huami Amazfit Band 5: An oldie but a goodie

Companies like Amazfit continue to offer alternatives to Xiaomi that also deliver on the basics. In fact, the Huami Amazfit Band 5 is basically a clone of the Xiaomi Mi Band 5. It packs a blood oxygen monitor, an optical heart rate monitor, and decent sleep tracking. By day, it also tracks steps, distance, and calories, and offers sport programs for more than ten unique workouts. Plus, it packs a battery life of around two weeks.

However, the Amazfit Band 5 is a bit of an older device at this point and to be honest, we’re hoping to see a Band 6 from the company in the coming months. In the meantime, this device remains a good alternative to the Xiaomi lineup and a budget option that’s typically readily available.

The Amazfit Band 5 is a budget pick worthy of consideration. With solid fitness tracking, connected GPS and support for Amazon Alexa, this device is well worth its low price.

Charge 5: The best Fitbit fitness tracker

Fitbit’s Charge 5 is a notch above, a fact that’s also reflected in its price. It features a bright OLED display on a slim comfortable device conducive to all-day wear. Users will find an EDA stress sensor, SpO2 sensor, and skin temperature tracking, plus, of course, built-in GPS.

But is it worth springing for this device? If budget isn’t a concern, we say absolutely. On the other hand, the Charge 5 asks users to spend $50 more than they would on a Charge 4 which keeps Fitbit’s last generation in the conversation. We loved the older model and would still recommend it to anyone looking to cut costs.

Same form factor, way better display

The Fitbit Charge 5 is a major update from its predecessor. Not only does it have a color AMOLED display, it’s the first tracker to come with Fitbit’s Daily Readiness Score — a feature that aims to predict how much activity or rest you should take on for the day.

Pros

  • Bright, beautiful full-color OLED display
  • Smaller and slimmer than Charge 4
  • EDA, SpO2, and skin temperature tracking
  • Usual quality of Fitbit tracking accuracy

Cons

  • No altimeter
  • Battery life isn’t great
  • Expensive

Apple Watch SE: The best pick for Apple users

If your budget can stretch, the Apple Watch SE is pricier still, but it’s the cheapest Apple Watch available. In fact, it’s the model most people should buy. The company’s affordable offering, the SE makes lots of small cuts, such as extra sensors, that won’t matter to most buyers anyway. It keeps, however, Apple’s accurate fitness tracking, noteworthy iPhone integration, and unmatched app support.

Of course, this device lands at a higher price point than the Xiaomi Band 7, but if you can afford it (and are an Apple user looking for an accurate fitness tracker as well as a powerful smartphone companion), it’s worth the cash. Plus, with rumors circulating about an SE 2 in the works, shoppers may be able to find the original on sale soon.
