X-Men ’97 Brings Marvel Mutant Revival to Disney Plus in Fall 2023 – CNET

We got our first glimpse at the Disney Plus revival of the beloved ’90s X-Men animated series, as the upcoming X-Men ’97 was revealed Friday during San Diego Comic-Con. The show is scheduled to hit Disney’s streaming service in fall 2023, Marvel Studios said.

The original series ran for five seasons, from 1992 to 1997 (and is all on Disney Plus).

Magneto, who’s often been the X-Men’s deadliest enemy, will be the team’s leader in the show — the final episode of the old series saw a mortally wounded Professor X leaving Earth to get medical care from alien allies the Shi’ar. Sunspot, Cable, Bishop and Nightcrawler will also join the mutant superteam.

Most of the surviving members of the older series’ voice cast are returning for X-Men ’97 — actor Cal Dodd teased his return as Wolverine back in January. Writer and executive producer Beau DeMayo noted that the show will use the extremely cool X-Men theme music. A second season was also announced.

This show doesn’t appear to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we got musical previews for it in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Ms. Marvel finale — a little bit of the show’s updated theme tune plays when Professor X first appears and when Kamala Khan learns the truth of her origins.

The series was among the Marvel shows announced during last November’s Disney Plus Day. Also revealed during Friday’s Marvel animation panel were release windows for What If…? season 2Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshman Year, along with a trailer for I Am Groot.
