1897: India Frontier Fighting

SIMLA, Tuesday—News has been received from Peshawur that a reconnaissance party consisting of two squadrons of the 9th Bengal Lancers, under Captain Creagh, became entangled in the hills on the road to Mamanni, and were ambuscaded. The Second Division of the Tirah force was sent from Shinwari yesterday under General Palmer to operate against Dargai and another village in its vicinity, while a direct attack on the enemy’s position was made under General Westmacott, via Chagra Kotal. The operations were completely successful. The position held by the enemy was most difficult of access but Dargai was captured and its defenses demolished. The British casualties were: killed, Gordon Highlanders, Major Jennings Bramley and two privates; severely wounded, Lieutenant Pears, of the Scottish Rifles, who was temporarily attached to the Gordon Highlanders; wounded, 14 privates of the King’s own Scottish Borderers. The total killed was 10, and wounded 53. The retirement to Shinwari was absolutely unmolested. The troops both British, and native behaved splendidly. The enemy lost heavily.
