7 shows to check out after Amazon’s Emily Blunt-starring western The English

The English sees an English noblewoman travelling west in 1890 to seek revenge on the man she blames for her son’s death. In America, she meets an ex-cavalry scout and member of the Pawnee Nation, who she rides with, the two learning about a shared history along the way.

Written and directed by Scott Frank and produced by Steven Soderbergh, Godless is one of the best western shows ever made and an underappreciated Netflix original miniseries. It stars Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery, Scoot McNairy, Merritt Wever, and Jeff Daniels. A former member of a gang of outlaws seeks refuge in a small town populated almost entirely by women. When his old boss comes looking for him, the women have to choose whether to provide sanctuary and incur the wrath of a notorious killer.

The textbook prestige western series, Deadwood was one of the defining HBO dramas of the 2000s, and it’s among the best shows like The English that you can stream now. In a lawless town in post-Civil War America, powerful people come to make their fortunes when a gold strike proves the town may be worth developing. With that comes conflict and the promise (or threat) of “civilization.”

Another western featuring a woman out for blood, Wynonna Earp plays with genre in a way that makes it a show like The English while simultaneously something else entirely. Wynonna Earp, descendant of the famous Wyatt Earp, returns home after years away. Ready to take on her birthright, she fights off the demonic souls of criminals taken out by her  great-grandfather as they try to escape into the world of the living.

Another modern-day western, Justified stars Timothy Olyphant and is based on stories by Elmore Leonard. Known for his Wild West-style of justice, Deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens is reassigned to his hometown in Kentucky, where old relationships complicate his work.

Anson Mount stars in this terrific western series from AMC. A former Confederate soldier mourning the death of his wife and trying to put the war behind him finds himself working on the Union Pacific Railroad as he moves westward, seeking revenge on the Union soldiers who killed his wife.

Not strictly a western, as it’s based in Canada, Frontier is still a stellar show set, as you may well have guessed, on the frontier. The series stars Jason Momoa as an outlaw trapper who sets his sights on challenging the Hudson’s Bay Company’s monopoly on the fur trade in Canada. Doing so incurs the wrath of Lord Benton, who seeks to reestablish control, but in so doing declares war on an adversary he may have underestimated.

A Showtime miniseries that didn’t get a lot of attention despite being terrific, The Good Lord Bird is among the best shows like The English that you can currently watch. Based on a larger-than-life historical novel by James McBride, the series tells the story of a group of abolitionists on a mission to end slavery in America, all told from the perspective of a newly freed teenager who rides with the abolitionist John Brown.
