The Sex Lives of College Girls has most often been compared to HBO’s Girls since its premiere. While the two shows explore very different life stages, they both center young women in transition periods. Lena Dunham stars in Girls (which she also created) as a recent college graduate hoping to find her voice as a writer, navigating life in New York with her small friend group, balancing work, family, sex, and relationships.

ABC’s Felicity is one of the best college-set shows of all time and certainly one of the best shows like The Sex Lives of College Girls. The series, created by J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, follows a shy teen who breaks out of her pre-determined path to follow a boy she has a crush on to NYU. There, she begins the process of finding herself with new friends in a new city.

A spinoff of ABC’s hit sitcom Black-ish, Grown-ish follows the Johnson kids going off to college, where they experience the strange, in-betweenness that comes when you’re transitioning into adulthood. A show like The Sex Lives of College Girls in this way, Grown-ish tackles the challenges and the freedom that come with leaving home and finding your own path forward.

This short-lived comedy created by Judd Apatow and starring such familiar actors as Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, and Charlie Hunnam, didn’t make much of a splash when it aired in 2001, but it has since earned something of a cult following. The series follows six undergrads making their way through college life, with all its trials and tribulations.

Another college-set streaming original, Dear White People is based on the 2014 film of the same name. The series explores issues affecting Black students through a progressive lens. Set at an Ivy League school, Dear White People follows several Black characters grappling with identity in different ways.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Sally Rooney, Normal People is far more dramatic and romantic than The Sex Lives of College Girls, but it similarly explores complex relationships between young people in school. After a secret relationship in high school, popular jock Connell and shy nerdy introvert Marianne reconnect in university. There, power dynamics and social standing have shifted, but their mutual attraction remains just as strong.

A hugely popular comedy about college, Community goes for a more absurdist take on campus life than The Sex Lives of College Girls. Still, there’s plenty of thematic overlap. The series follows a group of unlikely friends who form a study group at their community college. While they do very little studying, the seven do find a community in one another and tackle the challenges of higher learning together.
