Food security, energy and military aid: What to watch for this week.

Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said on Sunday that his country was working hard to extend the Black Sea grain deal, which allows cargo ships to transport Ukrainian grain past a Russian blockade.

“We are working hard for the smooth implementation and further extension of the Black Sea grain deal,” Mr. Cavusoglu said in Doha, Qatar, at the United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, according to the Turkish state broadcaster TRT.

The head of the U.N. World Food Program said that “lives are at stake” if the agreement, which expires this month, isn’t renewed.

Here are some other developments we’re watching in the war in Ukraine:

  • Next Winter: Ukrainian officials are working to repair and decentralize its power grid, allowing people to generate and supply their own electricity, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday. He added, “We are working on all scenarios and will do everything to be ready to face any threat next winter.”

  • European Aid: Defense ministers from the European Union will discuss military aid, training, and financing the purchase of artillery ammunition for Ukraine at a meeting in Sweden on Wednesday and Thursday.

  • United Front: The Biden administration said on Friday that it would deliver $400 million more in weapons to Ukraine, including howitzers and HIMARS launchers. The package came on the same day President Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany vowed that allies would remain united in supporting Kyiv despite the growing concerns that China could move to supply weapons to Moscow.
