TL;DR
Samsung confirmed in a blog post that the Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, and “upcoming” Galaxy Watches would receive “up to four years” of One UI Watch and Wear OS updates. This means Samsung should support its current crop of flagship smartwatches through 2026.
Our verdict: Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 review
On top of the Galaxy Watch 4’s proven hardware and lower price versus its predecessor, Samsung’s new software commitment makes it an even better proposition. Users can also expect regular patches and improvements if the company’s support for its smartwatches is anything like its top-level phones. So far, Samsung has brought some welcome additions to its smartwatches in several update rounds.
Worryingly, for non-Samsung users, the announcement seems to be independent of Google. It remains unclear what Google’s support plans are for Wear OS 3, especially as Fossil and Mobvoi adopt the refreshed platform later this year.
