The Longest-Range VW ID.4 Just Got An Extra 20 Miles Of Range, Costs A Little More For 2022

Volkswagen announced today that the 2022 ID.4 Pro has an EPA-estimated range of 280 miles. That’s 20 miles more than the 2021 model, which was rated at 260 miles by the EPA.

Volkswagen hasn’t said how it got 20 more miles out of the all-electric crossover this year but the improvements seem to be coming across the range. The ID.4 Pro S is now rated at 268 miles of range in RWD trim, whereas it was previously rated 250 miles of range. The AWD ID.4 Pro, meanwhile, is rated at 251 miles and the ID.4 Pro S with AWD can go 245 miles between charges.

Although an improvement, the ID.4 still can’t quite keep up with what is perhaps its closest rival, the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The rear-wheel-drive 2022 California Route 1 Edition can go up to 314 miles per charge, according to the EPA.

The ID.4 still gets a 77 kWh (82 kWh gross) battery that powers one 201 hp (150 kW/204 PS) motor at the back for RWD models and motors at each axle that combine to make 295 hp (220 kW/299 PS) for the AWD models.

Along with the extra range, Volkswagen says that it has improved the ID.4’s DC-fast charging speeds from 125 kW to 135 kW for 2022 model year vehicles. The company hasn’t said how much time it expects that to save you at the plug but, as always, the first 30 minutes of charging will be free for the first two years of ownership at Electrify America charging stations. The model will also get a Plug and Charge feature later this year that will simplify the charging experience at Electrify America charging stations.

Prices start at $40,760 ($41,995 w/ $1,195 destination fee) for the 2022 rear-wheel drive Pro model before any federal tax credits. That marks a modest increase of $765 over the 2021 model. The ID.4 AWD Pro, meanwhile, starts at $44,440 ($45,635 w/ destination), the Pro S model starts at $45,260 ($46,455 w/ destination), and the ID.4 AWD Pro S model starts at $48,940 ($50,135 w/ destination).
