As Maserati is gearing up for the debut of the Grecale on March 22, our spy photographers caught a camouflaged prototype of the fully electric variant of the SUV testing in the Arctic Cicle. The Maserati Grecale Folgore, as they will likely call it, is expected to debut in 2023, joining the ICE-powered and hybrid variants that will be already on sale.
From a distance, the Grecale Folgore looks like any other Grecale prototype, however, a closer examination reveals a few differences. First of all, the camouflage wrap is identical to the fully electric GranTurismo Folgore that was spied last week. Then there is the absence of exhaust pipes revealing the EV nature of the SUV, alongside the fully covered intakes on the front bumper. The grille bearing the Trident emblem still has some openings though.

The Grecale Folgore sits closer to the ground compared to the regular versions. This is accentuated by the extra plastic cover under the rear end, likely protecting the battery pack. Unlike other upcoming EVs from Stellantis brands, the Grecale Folgore won’t be using an STLA EV-dedicated platform. Instead, it will be based on an electrified version of the Giorgio architecture from the FCA days, heavily modified to support the new powertrain.
We don’t know the power output of the electric motors but it is rumored that the zero-emission Grecale will get 800V technology which will enable rapid charging. Its biggest competitor in the market will be the upcoming Porsche Macan EV which is expected to debut later this year. It will also be similar-sized with the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron, the Mercedes-Benz EQC, and the BMW iX3, although Maserati always had a sportier and more premium positioning than the German trio.
Besides the electric Folgore, the Grecale will be available with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 – including the Trofeo high-performance version – and a rumored turbocharged and supercharged mild-hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
