TL;DR

  • Google has announced that YouTube Music on Wear OS is getting streaming support this week.
  • This will allow users to stream tracks over Wi-Fi or LTE connections.

It took Google years to do so but it finally brought YouTube Music to Wear OS last year. This allowed smartwatch owners to download music for later playback, but it unfortunately didn’t offer streaming.

Now, Google has announced (h/t: 9to5Google) that YouTube Music on Wear OS is indeed getting streaming over Wi-Fi or LTE networks this week. In other words, you don’t need to download specific tracks and playlists in advance.

You’ll need to be a YouTube Music Premium subscriber to take advantage of this capability, while Google adds that this is the first YouTube Music app for smartwatches that allows downloading and streaming without the use of a companion phone (cellular streaming isn’t available on the Apple Watch yet).

Google confirmed that YouTube Music is also getting a new tile on Wear OS, allowing you to quickly access a recently played playlist or the browse page.

Either way, the streaming option is a long-overdue addition for the smartwatch platform, allowing Wear OS users to take advantage of their cellular-enabled watches when out and about.
