BMW Promises That Playtime Is Coming As It Teases 2023 M2 In New Video

BMW has released a new video teasing the upcoming M2 coupe. Unfortunately light on details, the company did note that BMW M is celebrating “its 50th birthday, and you get the presents.”

The spot, which invites people to “get ready for playtime,” shows very little of the car apart from a few frames of a darkened M2 drifting and a very brief shot of its interior, albeit one largely focused on the driver. Indeed, the video taps into the M2’s reputation as a source of joy, rather than its utility as a track weapon.

BMW announced last month that the M2 would be made exclusively at its plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. At that time, it promised to take “BMW’s excellent dynamic performance even further, with advanced engineering that allows it to combine the capabilities of competition cars with the ease of use in everyday driving.”

Although our spy photographers have caught the M2 testing a few times, the company has kept a shroud over the car with camouflage, so many details remain secret. The most recent images, however, do show a number of big hungry vents along the front of the vehicle.

Like the updated 2-Series Coupe, the M2 is expected to feature BMW’s new curved screen. It combines the instrument cluster and the infotainment screen into one massive unit and can now be found on BMW’s German configurator.

Although we expect the M2 to be powered by a 3.0-liter straight-six, how much power it will make remains a mystery. The car could produce anywhere from 430 hp (436 PS/321 kW) to 490 hp (497 PS/365 kW) depending on trim. Both an automatic and manual transmission should be available and BMW may offer the car with rear- and all-wheel-drive.

BMW has not yet specified when it will unveil the 2023 M2, though it has said that production will start this year. We would, therefore, expect the car to be presented relatively soon. Since the M division is celebrating its 50th anniversary, the company may choose to pull the wraps on it at a celebratory event like Goodwood or the 24 Hours of Nurburgring.
