Overlanding has exploded in popularity, but it’s far from new and that’s clear from this 1977 GMC Jimmy Casa Grande which will be auctioned by Mecum next month.
One of a reported 225 produced, this particular model has undergone a “comprehensive restoration” and still features its original graphics.
While the listing is light on specifics, the SUV has a gold and white exterior as well as a removable roof that has been replaced by a fiberglass camper. The latter is the star of the show as it features numerous windows and a large rear door.

Moving into the cabin, we can see a classic two-spoke steering wheel, wood trim, and tan front seats. Of course, the camper is the real highlight and an old brochure reveals the model came equipped with “convertible bunk seats” and a standard dinette table.
The Casa Grande also has a generous kitchen with a two-burner stove and a stainless steel sink that features an electric pump as well as a five gallon (22.7 liter) water tank. This particular model appears to be a higher-end variant as we can see what appears to be a 5,000 BTU LPG heater and what looks like the optional refrigerator. They’re joined by a large storage cabinet and a pop-up roof that allows the interior to boast more than 6’ 7” of headroom.
While the Jimmy Casa Grande came standard with a three-speed manual and a 5.7-liter V8, this model may have the optional 6.6-liter (400 cubic inch) V8 and Turbo Hydra-matic transmission. Regardless of the powertrain combination, the SUV came standard with four-wheel drive.
