What’s The Ugliest American Car Ever Made?

Automotive design isn’t easy. Nevertheless, most production cars end up being attractive enough to sell in decent numbers and even the worst offenders tend to be more boring than actually ugly. That brings us to our question of the day: what’s the ugliest American car ever made?

Choosing from just cars made in America is a key point too because many would simply point to the Fiat Multipla and call this competition over if it wasn’t limited to the States. At the same time, we think that the long-hated Pontiac Aztek isn’t necessarily the right answer either.

There are far more options that we think deserve more consideration including the first-generation Jeep Compass to kick things off. Not only is it oddly proportioned but it somehow tries to blend hard creases with rounded body panels and fails in just about every way possible. The only cohesive design aspect seems to be a lack of cohesion.

It gets a lot worse though because, in 2013, a little company out of Los Angeles reportedly built and sold three examples of a car called the Youabian Puma. Built atop a steel and aluminum chassis, the cab is taken directly from a Volvo C70 convertible coupe. While the Volvo itself is quite a diminutive car, the Puma is anything but.

Consider this, from nose to tail, this two-door four-seater vehicle is 242 inches (614 cm) long and the roof stands 72 inches (182 cm) above the ground. For reference, the 2022 Jeep Compass SUV is less than 65 inches (165 cm) tall. Really though, it’s not the size that makes the Puma our pick as the ugliest American car ever.

Just take a look at this thing. There’s really nothing about it that looks redeemable. Surely, some of you will point out cars like the AMC Pacer, the Gremlin, or the Mustang II. Those are all ugly cars but a few folks will really go to bat for them. We can’t imagine anyone willing to argue that the Puma is any prettier than a cat’s breakfast.
