Opel Zafira-e Life Crosscamp Flex Is An EV Camper With A 200-Mile Range

Following the diesel-powered Opel Zafira Life Crosscamp that debuted last year, the company is now applying the same treatment to the fully electric Zafira-e Life. The EV camper that can sleep up to four people with all the amenities will be available from 2023.

The Zafira-e Life Crosscamp Flex features a pair of 180-degree rotating front seats, a rear bench that transforms into a double bed, and a rising roof with an extra double bed. The kitchenette includes a gas cooker, a sink, a cool box, and cupboards for storage, alongside separate containers for drinking water and wastewater.

As with the standard Zafira-e Life that debuted in 2020, the camper is fitted with a front-mounted electric motor producing 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque. Predictably, it uses the larger floor-mounted 75-kWh lithium-ion battery which is good for a range of 322 km (200 miles). The WLTP figure for the regular passenger van is 330 km (205 miles), so it seems that the extra weight of the camping gear is not affecting it much. Using a 100 kW DC fast charger, the battery can go to 80 percent charge in 48 minutes. The main battery’s energy is reserved for driving, so Opel added an auxiliary 95 Ah battery for powering the amenities.

The Zafira-e Life Crosscamp Flex will be showcased at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, Germany between August 26 and September 6, before its market launch in 2023. Opel didn’t announce pricing but we expect it to be more expensive than the diesel-powered Crosscamp which is priced at €45,999 ($45,925) in Germany. There will also be a slightly cheaper Crosscamp Lite variant.

Similarly-sized proposals from other automakers with an electric powertrain include the Mercedes-Benz EQV camper that is already available for sale since early 2022, and the Renault Hippie Caviar Hotel concept based on the Renault Traffic. Judging from the growing EV camper trend, we wouldn’t be surprised if the smaller Opel Combo e-Life MPV would receive a similar Crosscamp treatment in the future.
