TL;DR

  • The Happy Ring will be the latest smart ring to enter the market.
  • Unlike other similar wearables, the Happy Ring will mainly focus on mental health.
  • The Happy Ring will use a subscription model that includes a monthly, annual, and 24-month plan.

Have you been feeling stressed out lately? Sean Rad, the founder of Tinder, wants to help you manage your stress levels with his startup’s new product — the Happy Ring.

Like the Oura Ring, Circular Ring, and Motiv Ring, the Happy Ring is a smart ring that was made to monitor your body in real-time. However, what seems to set this device apart from others is its focus on your mood.

Where other wearables tend to be more fitness trackers than anything else, Rad’s company — Happy Health — has designed its product to be more about the user’s mental health. To help the device achieve this goal, it includes a variety of biometric sensors and artificial intelligence.

According to The Verge, the ring includes a custom electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor, four skin electrodes, four light wavelength sensors, accelerometers, and two temperature sensors. With these features, the ring can detect changes in your sympathetic nervous system — the part of you that activates your fight or flight response.

CEO of Happy Health and medical doctor, Dustin Freckleton, explained to The Verge that the Happy Ring doesn’t compare its data to a predetermined standard. It instead continually adjusts the AI model to the individual person’s data. Through its phone app, the data is used to suggest personalized exercises that Rad claims are scientifically proven to help manage stress and improve mood.

These exercises aren’t the kind that have you running and jumping around. Rather, they are activities that help calm you down such as breath work, meditation, and cognitive behavioral therapy-based journaling.

Freckleton claims the Happy Ring has “medical grade” accuracy and is the most accurate smart ring currently on the market.

It’s important to note that no wearable device is a replacement for actual therapy when it comes to mental health matters. But if the Happy Ring has piqued your interest, you’ll have to get on the waitlist. You won’t have to pay for the hardware itself because it will use a three-tier subscription model. The first tier is the monthly subscription that comes to $30 per month, annually will cost $24 per month, and a 24-month subscription will come to $20 per month.

The wearables market is crowded with many worthy competitors, so finding a way to set yourself apart from the pack is crucial to finding success. Will the Happy Ring’s dedication to mental health be enough to convince buyers to open up their wallets? We’ll just have to wait and see when the device comes out.
