Leaked GTA VI Gameplay Confirmed As Real, Rockstar Games Says Development Continues As Planned

Rockstar Games has been developing Grand Theft Auto VI for years and recently a hacker leaked a number of files claiming that they showed real gameplay footage. The developer has now confirmed the hack and the legitimacy of the videos. Not only do the videos confirm a number of rumors but they also show new content not previously reported.

It’s been more than nine years since the release of GTA V, and fans are more than ready for the next installment. In February, Rockstar Games confirmed the development of what we believe will be called GTA VI. Then, in July, we heard that there would be a female lead character and that the game would be set in Vice City. This leak confirms both of those rumors completely.

A GTAForums user named ‘teapotuberhacker’ posted 90 videos showing a GTA VI test build running with source code from both GTA V and GTA VI. Rockstar Games confirmed the hack and expressed its disappointment that features of the game were revealed in this manner.

“An unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,” the company wrote. The clips show a number of details likely to make the final cut of the game. The female lead character, named Lucia, is seen in a number of situations including taking hostages during a robbery. In addition, public transportation with Vice City on the side is also shown.

The clips have been posted all over the internet including on YouTube and Twitter. As of this writing, the company that owns Rockstar Games, Take 2 seems to be initiating copyright claims on a number of the clips. For the time being, the files are the closest thing to GTA VI that it sounds like fans will get for the foreseeable future.

Rockstar Games says that it’ll continue working on GTA VI and that it “will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready.” We don’t expect the game itself to go on sale for at least another year.
