The Cupra Born, the sporty sibling of the VW ID.3 from Spain, is likely getting ready for an early facelift as hinted at by several camouflaged prototypes caught by our spy photographers in the Alps.
The production version of Cupra’s first EV was introduced in May 2021, with the first model coming out of the production line at the Zwickau plant in Germany on September 2021. This means that in 2022 the model will be just two years old, making it quite early for an update. Despite this, Cupra recently previewed facelifts for several members of its lineup including the Born, the Leon, and the Formentor, during the announcement of the hybrid-only Terramar.

As hinted at by the positioning of the camouflage wrap, visual changes on the Cupra Born will be focused on the front end. The EV is expected to adopt Cupra’s new grille-less family face combined with sportier bumper intakes, and revised LED graphics on the headlights. The prototype is still fitted with the old lighting units but we’re still at an early stage of development. We can also see the sensor for the ADAS located in the new lower bumper intake.
The profile and the rear end are identical to the current Born, with the exception of the new alloy wheels equipped with extra hardware for testing purposes. The rear badge is also covered with camouflage, which is a standard practise on prototypes trying to hide their origins.

We don’t know if Cupra is planning on updating the MEB architecture, but there are rumors about a more powerful variant of the Born with dual electric motors – similar to the upcoming VW ID.3 GTX. Currently, the model is available in RWD guise with two different power outputs – 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) and 228 hp (170 kW / 231 PS). Three battery capacities are offered, with 45 kWh, 55 kWh, and 77 kWh, allowing a driving range between 340-540 km (211-370 miles).
We expect to learn more about Cupra’s new and updated model launch spree in the next few months. Besides the electrified Leon, Formentor, and Terramar, Cupra will expand its EV range with the MEB-based Cupra Tavascan which is the equivalent of the VW ID.4 / ID.5.
