Foxconn Debuts Electric Model B Compact SUV And Model V Pickup Prototypes

Taiwanese tech and manufacturing giant Foxconnt that’s best known for assembling Apple’s iPhone unveiled two EV prototypes that are destined for production during the 2022 Hon Hai Tech Day.

To be marketed under the Foxtron brand that’s a collaboration between Foxcon and Yulon Motor company, the Model B is a compact crossover designed by Pininfarina, while the Foxconn-braned Model V is Taiwan’s first electric pickup truck. The company also announced the production version of last year’s Model C concept for 2023.

During the past two years, Foxtron has shown a total of five concepts including the Model C SUV, the Model E sedan, and the Model T bus from last year’s Tech Day event. However, only the Model B hatchback and Model E sedan were styled by Pininfarina, something that is evident from their shared design language.

Foxtron Model B: Gunning For The VW ID.3 With Pininfarina Styling

The Model B sounds like a promising EV for global markets. Foxconn describes it as an urban crossover although it looks more like a compact hatchback. The concept is based on the MIH modular architecture and has a similar footprint to the VW ID.3, measuring 4,300 mm (169.3 inches) long, 1,865 mm (73.4 inches) wide, and 1,530 mm (60.2 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm (110.2 inches).

Pininfarina’s styling is to the point, giving the Model B a sculpted body, full-width LED lights on both ends, a vented bonnet, air-curtain D-pillars, and an aerodynamic roofline resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.26 cd. The high-tech taillights can also project graphics like the charging status of the battery, or communicate with other road users.

Inside, the highlight is the massive 15.6-inch free-standing display for the infotainment. It is combined with a tiny digital instrument cluster and two additional screens for the digital mirrors. The concept comes equipped with Foxconn’s upgradeable infotainment software and an array of ADAS. The steering wheel has an array of integrated buttons which explains the lack of physical controls on the center console. The seats, armrest, and door cards are upholstered in white perforated leather for a premium note, contrasting the black plastics.

The Model B shares its underpinnings with the Model C, although it is shorter and has a single electric motor producing 230 hp (169 kW / 233 PS). Foxconn claims it has a range of 450 km (280 miles), without mentioning the protocol for this estimate, or the battery capacity.

Foxconn Model V: A Compact Pickup From Taiwan With An Electric Powertrain

Moving on to the Model V pickup, this one doesn’t feature Foxtron branding but has a Foxconn badge on the tailgate. It was designed in-house, with a double-cab bodystyle, L-shaped LED graphics, flush door handles, multiple ADAS sensors integrated around the bodywork, and a fair amount of ground clearance. Inside the five-seater cabin, we find white upholstery and a digital cockpit with four screens including two for the camera-replacing mirrors.

The 3,220 mm (126.8 inches) wheelbase is 50 mm (2 inches) shorter than this of a Ford Ranger, while the 1,500 mm (59 inches) long rear bed is very similar to the Toyota Hilux. Foxconn’s electric pickup has a payload capacity of 1 ton (2,205 pounds) which is typical of ICE-powered models of this size, and can tow up to 3 tons (6,614 pounds). The company didn’t announce the output of the electric motors the Model V is described as an all-terrain pickup making us believe it could offer AWD. The range is estimated at 420 km (261 miles), and the battery can charge from 20 to 80 percent in 30 minutes.

Yulon Motor Luxgen n7 On The Roads In 2023

The first Foxconn concept to reach production is the Model C, which will be sold as the Luxgen n7 by Yulon Motor. The company claims it has already received 15,000 pre-orders for the SUV in less than two days, with the first deliveries expected in 2023. The concept promised 700 km (435 miles) of range, a power output of 460 hp (338 kW / 466 PS), and a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 3.8 seconds.

Young Liu, Hon Hai Chairman and CEO, said: “We used to make PCs and mobile
phones. From now and into the future, we will create EVs”. Hon Hai Group aims to become a provider of a Contract and Design Manufacturing Service (CDMS) throughout the next decade. Below you can watch the entire Hon Hai Tech Day presentation which was broadcasted in English.
