BMW has issued a recall for four examples of the X5 SUV because of an issue with the driver’s seat.

A recall notice issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that impacted vehicles have driver’s seats where one of the four bolts connecting the backrest to the seat frame may not have been installed according to specifications. Consequently, the seat backrest may not be fully locked and in the event of a crash, this could increase the risk of injury to the driver.

BMW became aware of the issue on December 7, 2022 after the seat supplier noticed that a seat had not been properly assembled. The supplier informed BMW that some faulty driver seats may have been delivered to the automaker’s vehicle assembly plant and installed in vehicles.

The problem was triggered because the software parameters for the seat backrest bolt torquing process had been updated with incorrect information on November 2, 2022, meaning the backrest could have been attached with bolts containing an out-of-specification torque.

Involved in the recall is a single example of the 2023 X5 sDrive40i, a single X5 M40i (both produced between November 4, 2022 and November 30, 2022), and two X5 xDrive 45e models manufactured between November 4, 2022 and November 29, 2022.

Dealers were notified of the recall on December 19, 2023 and owners will be alerted on February 17. The driver’s seat will be inspected and the affected backrest attachment bolt will be replaced if necessary.
