Expensive and luxurious cars are not immune to recalls, as evidenced by a recently-issued recall for 2023 BMW 7-Series and i7 models.

A recall notice issued by BMW of North America has revealed that select 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60 were built with front passenger seat electronic control unit software that could be faulty.

The recall reveals that vehicles equipped with the Executive Lounge Seating Package have an issue with the seat’s ECU where it may not recognize the seat position. In the event of this happening, an invalid seat position will be communicated to the ECU of the airbag and restrain system, triggering a failsafe mode and issuing a warning to passengers. If the car is involved in a crash while in this failsafe model, the front passenger airbag, knee airbag, and active headrest will not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.

2023 BMW 7-Series And i7 Models Face Airbag Deployment Failure

The recall involves a total of 305 BMW 760i xDrive models that were manufactured between July 5, 2022 and January 24, 2023. Some 92 BMW i7 xDrive60 models are also involved in the recall and were built from July 4, 2022 to January 24, 2023.

The German carmaker first became aware of a potential issue when on November 2 last year during a quality check at a vehicle assembly plant, a 735i was found with an airbag system warning message. BMW began to investigate and identified other models with the same warning. It soon discovered that a software coding issue of the seat position ECU was to blame and on January 27, decided to issue a recall.

Owners of impacted models will be notified from March 28, 2023 and they will be instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized dealer to have the problem resolved.
