Peugeot is ramping up its electrification program but besides the myriad of fully electric models coming in the near future, there is also a mild-hybrid engine set to be widely used in its model range. The new 1.2-liter PureTech petrol engine with the 48V system – originally announced in October 2022 – has now been detailed, as it debuts under the bonnet of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 Hybrid SUVs.
Mild Electrification Bringing Fuel Consumption Benefits
The new engine replaces the non-electrified 1.2 PureTech 130, bringing a slight increase in power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption. Thanks to the mild hybrid tech, and the extended use of the start-stop system, a compact SUV like the 3008 can operate in EV mode for more than 50% of the time (start, park, and drive at low speeds) in an urban environment, despite having a significantly smaller battery than a full hybrid system.

Peugeot‘s three-cylinder 1,2-liter PureTech engine under the bonnet features a variable geometry turbocharger and runs on the Miller cycle. A single electric motor producing up to 28 hp (21kW / 28PS) and 55 Nm (40.5 lb-ft) of torque is integrated within a new six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (e-DSC6) that sends power to the front axle. Energy is stored in the 48V battery which is located under the front left seat and has a gross capacity of 898 Wh (432 Wh usable)
The combined output of the mild hybrid powertrain is 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) and 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) of torque, which is 6 hp (4 kW / 6 PS) more than the non-electrified engine it replaces. More importantly, the 48V tech can save up to 1 lt/100 km of petrol on the WLTP combined cycle in a compact SUV (-2.5 lt/100km in the city, -0.7 lt/100km on the road, unchanged figures on the highway), while reducing CO2 emissions by up to 20g/km, thus being compatible the Euro 6.e standard.

Peugeot 3008 And 5008 SUVs Get It First, Other Models To Follow Soon
The mild-hybrid variants of the 3008 and the 5008 don’t have any visual changes compared to the rest of the range, so the only way to distinguish them is the sound emitted by the AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) when the combustion engine is turned off at speeds of up to 30 km/h (19 mph). We guess that Peugeot used the same system as in the plug-in hybrid models. Inside the cabin, the electrified SUVs have new graphics in the digital cockpit showing the flow of energy, a power meter (Charge, Eco, Power), the battery charge level, and the percentage of zero-emission driving after each trip. When the combustion engine is turned off, the speedometer turns blue.
The Peugeot 3008 and 5008 Hybrid will be produced at the Sochaux factory in France, with European sales expected to start in the second quarter of 2023. Note that the French automaker is already working on the next generation of the Peugeot 3008 which will likely inherit the mild-hybrid tech alongside a fully electric variant.
Peugeot confirmed that the mild-hybrid engine will soon find its way under the bonnet of the 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW, and 408. Besides the aforementioned engine which produces 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), the company has also confirmed a less powerful version with 99 hp (74 kW / 100 PS) although we don’t know which models will get this one. The 208 and 2008 will most likely go mild-hybrid as part of the upcoming mid-lifecycle update which is expected in 2023 and 2024 respectively. There is a high chance the same applies to the soon-to-be-facelifted 508, despite the fact it wasn’t mentioned in the press release.
Besides Peugeot, many other Stellantis brands will benefit from the mild hybrid tech, expanding its use in a number of mechanically-related models.
