BMW is gearing up to begin production of the new Mini Countryman which, for the first time, will be available in both combustion and all-electric guises. It will also be the first Mini model produced entirely in Germany after the brand moved production away from the UK due to Brexit.

The new Mini Countryman will roll off the same line as the BMW 1-Series, 2-Series Gran Coupe, and 2-Series Active Tourer from the end of this year. While Mini is remaining tight-lipped on details of the new Countryman, it says that the presence of a flat high-voltage battery and flat floor “will offer additional space and even greater comfort in the future.”

Dozens of images of the new model in prototype guise have been released. The all-electric hatchback is bathed in yellow and black camouflage, just like the prototypes our spy photographers recently uncovered.

Mini Gearing Up To Start Building Electric Countryman In Germany

Styling differences between the electric Countryman and combustion-powered Countryman will be minimal. We know the EV will receive a unique set of wheels and may have a simplified front fascia with fewer cooling ducts and openings. The obvious lack of tailpipes will also give away the hatch’s identity as an EV.

Current rumors suggest that the new Mini Countryman EV will receive the same powertrain as the BMW iX1. If true, that means a 64.7 kWh battery pack that works alongside a pair of electric motors to deliver 308 hp.

BMW notes that the high-voltage batteries powering the Countryman will be produced at the same Leipzig factory as the car itself. In fact, the automaker is expanding e-component production at the site thanks to an investment of over €800 million ($847 million).

“We are delighted to be able to hand over the first MINI ‘Made in Germany’ to our customers in a CO2-neutral manner thanks to the plant’s sustainable energy supply,” head of Mini, Stefanie Wurst said. “In this way, the new all-electric MINI Countryman demonstrates what the brand stands for: electrified go-kart feeling and a strong focus on a minimal environmental footprint.”
