Tesla’s long-awaited ‘Gigafactory Mexico’ has been confirmed and will be constructed near Monterrey in the state of Nuevo León in the north of the country.
A single rendered image of the new gigafactory was released by Tesla during its recent Investor Day. The rendering depicts an expansive facility with a roof covered in solar panels and positioned close to some hills. Little other details about the factory were released by the car manufacturer, other than the fact that it will build Tesla’s next-generation vehicle platform set to underpin a number of new EV models.
It is understood that Tesla has elected to construct the new manufacturing facility because it is just a 7-hour drive from the Gigafactory Texas and the company’s headquarters in Texas.
Tesla previously inked a deal with the state of Nuevo Leon in mid-2022 to have its own dedicated lane constructed at the border crossing to the U.S. in the state. This lane was established to help reduce wait times for cargo being transported from Tesla suppliers in Mexico to the factory in Texas.
News of Gigafactory Mexico was first broken by the country’s president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in late February. The announcement came after a call between Obrador and Elon Musk when the president voiced concerns about water scarcity in the Nuevo Leon region and suggested that the factory be located closer to Mexico City. The issue was resolved when Tesla committed to using recycled water throughout the entire manufacturing process.

Tesla has revealed that the Mexican factory will be one of seven new gigafactories that the car manufacturer must establish if it has any chance of hitting its goal of producing 20 million vehicles per year by the end of 2030.
