Ferrari recalling 13 SF90s for design flaw in passenger seat that could mean child seats aren’t safe for kids

Ferrari has launched one of the most surprising recalls of 2023, not because the fault itself is particularly odd, but because it implies that some SF90 owners are installing a child seat in their two-seat supercar.
The fault affects 13 SF90 coupes and Spiders from the 2021-2023 model years made between January 11, 2021, and November 3, 2022. Some of those vehicles have a seat that may not hold the child seat in the correct position and, in an accident, could lead to an increased risk of injury or death.
While that is, of course, serious, what’s interesting is how Ferrari found out. It was in the process of developing an unnamed new vehicle, which apparently shares seats with the SF90, and discovered that its medium size seats might not comply with child seat safety regulations.

According to the Ferrari configurator, it offers “Standard,” “Style,” “Daytona,” “Standard Racing Carbon,” and “Daytona Racing Carbon” seats in the 2023 SF90.
Following that discovery, it ran tests on the SF90, and it found that the L size seat did comply with regulations for child seats, but only just. It, therefore, reasoned that the M size seat would not satisfy technical standards for biomechanical performance.

Fortunately, Ferrari is not aware of any injuries or deaths that have arisen as a result of this design flaw. It has, however, decided to launch a recall campaign, and will start reaching out to customers on April 30.
They will be asked to return their vehicle to an authorized dealer, and the M size seat will be replaced by an XL size seat at no cost to the owner. As of February 21, 2023, the SF90 is only available with XL size seats.
