A plethora of different Polaris Slingshot variants need to be returned to U.S. dealerships because of a fault with the alternator.

The recall impacts a total of 163 vehicles. These consist of Slingshot R models built from June 22, 2022 to January 10, 2023, Slingshot S models with the Technology Package 1 built from June 20, 2022 to January 9, 2023, Slingshot SL models built from June 20, 2022 to January 10, 2023, Slingshot SLR models manufactured from June 20, 2022 to January 5, 2023, and Slingshot S models built on December 16, 2022.

Polaris says impacted vehicles have alternators that may have been improperly manufactured by the supplier, noting that an internal rotor segment may crack and separate during operation because the annealing process was missed by the supplier. To put that in layman’s terms, the faulty alternator could trigger a fire.

The company first became aware of the issue not due to a customer complaint from a Slingshot owner but rather two reports related to its off-road vehicles. Polaris started to immediately investigate the issue and quickly determined that the supplier may have improperly manufactured the alternator. There have been no reports of incidents from 2022-2023 Slingshot owners.

Owners of impacted Slingshot models will be notified from March 8. Dealers will be asked to replace the alternator free of charge and customers who have previously paid to replace or service their vehicle because of the faulty alternator may be eligible for reimbursement.
