It’s an open secret that Porsche is developing a flagship SUV for 2027 to sit above the Cayenne and battle luxury rivals like the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus.

But two new teaser images of the new luxury off-roader revealed at the company’s annual press conference show a sexy fastback design that makes even the new Purosangue look about as sleek as a UPS truck.

In one image we see the posh SUV, which the automaker has codenamed K1, from the front-three-quarter angle, and though it’s under a cover, we can still glean plenty about it. We can see peaked front fenders, the Taycan-style headlight nacelles, and a steeply raked windshield that make it clear this is a much sportier-looking machine than either the Macan or Cayenne. And is it just us, or does it look like the roof has a double-bubble shape, like the one on the limited edition 911 Sport Classic?

The second image is a profile outline shown on a slide explaining how Porsche’s products fit together in the lineup without overlapping. The SUV offerings start with the Macan (billed as a “lifestyle” product), move up to the Cayenne (“Functionality”) and top out with the new SUV, which Porsche tags “Prestige,” though its production name is not yet known.

That profile shot reveals Porsche’s entry into the hyper-luxury SUV space won’t look like any rival car. Even Ferrari’s Purosangue, whose design is far more car-like than any of its competitors, can’t boast a fastback as near-horizontal as the K1’s. Glancing across the slide to the Panamera sedan for context shows that the new flagship SUV has an almost identical roofline, though it will be paired with a generous helping of extra ground clearance.

“We are going to expand our product portfolio at the top end, using a new electric SUV positioned as a sporty SUV above the Cayenne,” explained the company’s CEO, Oliver Blume, in a video presentation.

“In doing so we will underline and strengthen our position in the luxury segment,” he added, saying that the new flagship would be a key tool to drive profit “in leaps and bounds”, particularly in China and the U.S.

Blume declined to give away many technical details beyond confirming it would be built around the SSP platform earmarked for the next Taycan, but said the K1 would feature Porsche’s famous “flyline” (the fastback tail), impressive performance, automated driving functions, and “a new interior experience.”

Porsche also used the annual press conference to confirm the rollout of the other electric models that will arrive before the new prestige SUV. The Macan EV hits showrooms in 2024, followed by the 718 Boxster and Cayman in 2025 and the first electric Cayenne in 2026.
