Subaru’s off-road focused Wilderness sub-brand is expanding as the company will introduce a new model at the New York Auto Show.

Set to debut on April 5th, the new variant promises to “bring the legendary capability of symmetrical all-wheel drive to a whole new frontier of adventure.” The company went on to say the vehicle will combine “rugged style” with “all-terrain upgrades” and the company’s “trusted” safety features.

That description is fluffier than a pancake, but the company already offers Wilderness versions of the Forester and Outback. The latter received a refreshening for 2024 and now sports a new front fascia with an even more aggressive bumper. However, the model is more notable for having an off-road focused suspension that provides 9.5 inches (241 mm) of ground clearance, which is nearly an inch (25 mm) more than the standard wagon.

Getting back to the teaser, it’s not very revealing as it just shows a Wilderness badge.  However, if we were to guess, the company is likely hinting at a Crosstrek Wilderness. That remains to be seen, but the redesigned Crosstrek celebrated its North American debut in February and Subaru already showed a rugged Crosstrek Boost Gear concept at last year’s Tokyo Auto Salon.

If that’s the case, we can expect a rugged crossover with more than 8.7 inches (221 mm) of ground clearance. We could also expect a 2.5-liter Boxer engine developing 182 hp (136 kW / 185 PS) and 178 lb-ft (241 Nm) of torque. It should be paired to a continuously variable transmission and a symmetrical all-wheel drive system.
