The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is a capable off-roader, but diesel fans have been feeling a little neglected. Thankfully, their time has come as the truck will be offered with a 3.0-liter Duramax engine for 2024.

The inline-six produces 305 hp (227 kW / 309 PS) and 495 lb-ft (670 Nm) of torque, and is paired to a ten-speed automatic transmission as well as a standard four-wheel drive system. Chevrolet said the engine was “meant for off-roading” and noted the Silverado ZR2 is the only light-duty off-road truck to offer diesel power.

Speaking of engines, the turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder is getting a spiffy new name: TurboMax. While the engine continues to produce 310 hp (231 kW / 314 PS) and 348 lb-ft (473 Nm) of torque, assistant chief engineer Kevin Luchansky remarked, “The TurboMax name encapsulates the modern engineering, manufacturing and controls which shuts the door on arguments against turbocharged engines from decades ago.”

Chevy Silverado ZR2 Gains Inline-Six Diesel Power For 2024

While the change is an adventure in branding, engine ‘names’ have become common in the full-size truck segment.  In particular, there’s EcoBoost, EcoDiesel and i-Force Max. However, Chevrolet isn’t limiting the moniker to the Silverado as it will be used on the Colorado in “due time.”

Lastly on the engine front, models equipped with the 6.2-liter V8 will feature an active dual exhaust system. Chevrolet said it’s “burly” and noted “engineers worked to introduce a throatier exhaust for when owners want it.”

Additional changes are limited, but the 2024 Silverado gets an updated color palette that includes Lakeshore Blue Metallic and Slate Gray Metallic. Customers can also get a Black Appearance Package on the Silverado Custom, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss and ZR2.

The luxurious Silverado High Country now comes standard with adaptive cruise control and is available as a new Midnight Edition. The latter includes new power-retractable black side steps with LED lighting.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the entry-level Silverado WT now comes equipped with OnStar as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The available WT Safety Package has also been upgraded to include front and rear park assist.
