The Pixel 7a comes with the same software update promise as the flagship Pixels.

However, the flagship Pixels often launch alongside the latest Android version and are thus able to take proper advantage of three additional platform updates. The Pixel A-series launches just a few months before a new Android version is launched, so it spends one of its promised platform updates rather early when the new version rolls out.

Samsung has the best software update promise among Android OEMs, and it’s a wide lead in the mid-range. For mid-range devices like the Samsung Galaxy A54, Samsung is promising four OS upgrades and five years of security patches. This means that the Galaxy A54 will receive Android 17 and security patches up to 2028, which is better than what you get on the Pixel 7a.

On the other hand, Apple makes no definite software update promises for its lineup but consistently keeps some of its oldest devices up to date with features and security patches. For example, the original iPhone SE was launched in March 2016 with iOS 9 and was updated all the way to iOS 15 in 2022.
