The world’s wealthy have been waiting for a plug-in hybrid version of the Lamborghini Urus for a long time and next year, this new version of the popular super SUV is set to finally hit the market.

Lamborghini first confirmed that a plug-in hybrid powertrain would be offered for the SUV way back in 2016, before the Urus was even launched in production guise. Recently, our spy photographers snapped a prototype undergoing testing as the development of the new version ramps up. In news that’s bound to excite customers, the Urus PHEV won’t just sport a new powertrain.

These spy shots, as well as others we have published in recent months, reveal that the Urus PHEV will have its own unique design. Among the unique elements of the new Urus PHEV will be its LED headlights which are slightly slimmer than those of the standard Urus. While it’s unclear if the headlights of this prototype are identical to those that will be featured on the production model, they do appear to lack the incorporated LED DRLs of existing Urus models.

Given that the front fascia will be unique, we suspect that the production model will also sport some rear-end components not fitted to the current Urus S and Urus Performante models.

The most important element of this Urus PHEV will be its powertrain. While Lamborghini has not confirmed what form this powertrain will take, it is tipped to be the same basic unit as found in the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid. That would mean a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 working alongside an electric motor that may pump out upwards of 800 hp.

Lamborghini should present the Urus PHEV to the world before the end of this year. It’s safe to assume that it will sell at a premium over existing variants.
